A Liar and A Cheat?

Missionary to America- Jason Li, China

Jason Li is a missionary to America. As such, he is a gift to America, and to the church in America.

But it was not quick nor was it easy for Jason Li to become a follower of Jesus. In the year 2000 the young man had come to the United States from China, to study chemical engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He knew nothing about Christianity. A roommate invited him to attend church. Jason says he got nothing out of this, until he began going to a Chinese speaking Christian group. “Before that I basically didn’t know what the pastor was talking about.” If he had become a Christian in China he would have met persecution, ostracism, with little hope for advancement in his field. But it wasn’t only work and social challenges he would face.

Jason’s family in China turned against him; to this day his parents believe he has become a liar and a cheat, convincing people to believe in something that doesn’t exist: they have therefore sought to “correct” his ways and stop his ministry by cutting off all funding. His Christian community became his surrogate family, finding support to see him through seminary. Today he is a missionary to Chinese people in southern California. He brings truth, peace and forgiveness to many. His life speaks for him.

Jason isn’t alone. I don’t just mean there are thousands of Christians in China who are being cut off from their families and jobs. or thousands in the United States that have turned away from Jesus. Jesus was also called a liar.

“We are stoning you for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” (John 10:33) But Jesus wasn’t lying. He had said to the crippled man, “Your sins are forgiven.” When the nay-sayers complained, “Who can forgive sins but God?” His answer was, “Which is easier to say, your sins are forgiven, or, take up your bed and walk? But so you will know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins…” He said to the paralyzed man, “Take your mat and go home.” And he did. His life spoke for Him. As does Jason’s life. As do the lives of all the courageous women and men whom God has sent to be missionaries to America. We can learn from them.
